At Precisionary Instruments, our sales team is the first point of contact for the researchers, labs, and distributors who rely on the Compresstome® every day — and that team is led by Matt Levin, our VP of Sales. Since joining Precisionary in May, Matt has brought a leadership style built on listening, empathy, and leading by example, shaping how our team connects with the scientific community we serve.
A People-First Path to Sales Leadership
Matt’s approach to leading the sales team starts with a simple idea: a leader has to model the outputs they expect from their team, not just ask for them.
“I subscribe to a ‘lead by example’ philosophy while running my teams,” Matt says. “All teams need clear direction and a prototype from which to model their actions. For a leader to best expect buy-in from a team, they must model the outputs they anticipate. I firmly believe organizations fail when there is asymmetry between a leader’s personal work output and the team’s output.”
That philosophy extends beyond output to how the team works together. Matt places a high value on empathetic leadership and psychological safety — creating space for open feedback and treating setbacks as opportunities rather than failures.
“No two teams are the same: every season is different, players change, and people grow,” he explains. “Sales leaders need to manage individuals and have the ability to identify the root causes of successes and failures, own them, and use them as opportunities for growth.”
Putting Customers’ Needs First
When Matt sits down with labs, researchers, and distributors, his goal isn’t to sell a product — it’s to understand a problem.
- Listens more than he speaks in customer conversations
- Asks targeted questions to understand a lab’s specific workstream
- Draws on Precisionary’s internal library of publications and protocols to match solutions to real research needs
“I firmly believe that our users are looking for solutions, rather than products,” Matt says. “They are encountering a specific problem that needs addressing. By listening and asking some poignant questions, we can best align with their current workstreams to provide a solution that works for their projects.”
He credits the depth of Precisionary’s internal knowledge base for making that solution-oriented approach possible. “Since onboarding with Precisionary, I have been very impressed by the wealth of knowledge we’ve cataloged internally to pass along relevant publications and protocols to support this solution-oriented approach.”
Excited for What’s Ahead
Matt’s enthusiasm for Precisionary starts with the product itself. “The products at Precisionary are truly exceptional. I have been incredibly impressed with how the Compresstome delivers exactly as promised for our userbase. It’s also very easy to use, which has made onboarding a breeze,” he says. “The engineering team here always looks to refine our technology, whether through incremental hardware improvements or by incorporating user feedback. I’m very excited to see how we adapt to the quickly evolving conditions in the laboratory space.”
He’s especially energized by Precisionary’s new pilot program sourcing donated human tissue for research. “The recent passing of the FDA Modernization Act eliminates the mandate requiring animal testing for all new drug development protocols. By offering researchers a way to use human models more readily, we can assist in accelerating the time it takes to bring a therapy to the clinic,” Matt explains. “I’m excited about this from a sales growth perspective, but it’s more so something Precisionary can do to make a tangible impact with the labs we support.”
