Dr. Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and an Assistant Investigator within the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

Currently at the forefront of perioperative neurobiology, Dr. Zhang’s pioneering research into the relationship between gut microbiota dysbiosis and delirium has fundamentally reshaped clinical understanding. Her work has been instrumental in advancing our knowledge of how the gut microbiome and its metabolites regulate specific proteins via neuroinflammatory pathways to provide neuroprotective effects.

Her academic excellence is reflected in a series of prestigious honors:

  • Junior Faculty Research Award (2023 & 2024): Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA).
  • Best Clinical Research Award: Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School.
  • 2024 Early Career Researcher Award: Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART).
  • 2025 Borten Family Foundation Junior Researcher Award: American Delirium Society (ADS).
  • 2025 Young Investigator Award: International Digestive Disease Forum (IDDF).

Beyond her laboratory contributions, Dr. Zhang is a key driver of global neuroscience development, currently serving as a member of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) Program Committee (term through 2028).

Why Attend?
In this highly practical and interactive session, Dr. Zhang will share her expertise on:

  • The Gut-Brain Axis: The latest research data on how gut health and microbial metabolites influence the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Methodological Excellence: Strategic planning for animal experiments using multi-organ tissue models and advanced histological techniques.
  • Global Research Priorities: Insights from her role on the SfN Program Committee regarding the scientific trends and priorities shaping the next era of global neuroscience research.
  • Academic Leadership & Career Strategy: Navigating the path from early-career researcher to faculty leadership, with a focus on sustainable career growth and mentorship in high-pressure environments.
