Compresstome®

Vibrating Microtomes

Our Compresstome® tissue slicer is a vibrating microtome that uses a high-frequency oscillating cutting blade to help you slice through tissue to get sections for research and clinical use.

Better Design.
Better Results.

Traditional vibratomes—which utilize a flat stage upon which a tissue sample is glued and a cutting blade that approaches horizontally—have a tendency to push, squish, and/or disrupt a sample unintentionally, damaging cells and tissue architecture.

The Compresstome® is different, utilizing a vertical blade that cuts downward through a sample of tissue that has been embedded in agarose (for stability) and fed through a cylindrical stainless steel tube that’s tapered at the end (for compression). The result yields ultra-smooth and consistent tissue slices that are devoid of chattermarks, every time.

Proven to Cut

More Consistently

The Compresstome® has been scientifically demonstrated to create more consistent tissue sections for immunohistochemistry and electrophysiology compared to other leading vibratomes. In a direct comparison, the Compresstome® (A, C, below) produced tissue sections with significantly fewer surface chattermarks than those produced by a leading vibratome from another brand (B, D). The sections were made at the same cutting speed and oscillation setting on both instruments.

FAQs

What is a Compresstome®?

Precisionary Instruments Compresstome® tissue slicers are a type of vibrating microtome, otherwise known as a vibratome. We call ours the Compresstome® because our models utilize a patented compression technology that no other tissue slicer on the market possesses. This technology works by cutting samples vertically instead of horizontally. More importantly, it uses a specimen tube that embeds tissue samples in low-melting agarose. The sample then exits the tube, and the blade cuts the sample right at the site of compression, creating even, consistent slices every time you cut.
